Breastfeeding is the gold standard of infant feeding due to multiple health benefits to mother and baby. This method of feeding is endorsed by many professional groups including The World Health Organization, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the USDA, and many others. South Carolina has encouraged breastfeeding and acknowledged it as a public right. Federal law now requires employers to provide lactation support in the workplace.

 Breastfeeding support at the workplace can positively impact the bottom line by lowering healthcare costs, enhancing productivity, decreasing absenteeism, improving employee satisfaction, increasing retention and improving corporate image. The workforce is changing dramatically. More than 50% of adult women are now in the workforce. Two-thirds of new employees will be women starting or returning to work. Seventy-five percent of working women become pregnant during their working lives.

 Acknowledging these facts, Greer Memorial Hospital was recognized as a Mother-Friendly Employer. Their lactation support program includes: a lactation support policy that provides employees with flexible break time to maintain lactation, education for all employees regarding the program and community resources available, and a private space (other than a bathroom) for women who need to use a breast pump at work.

 The Coalition and Eat Smart, Move More SC recently recognized Greer Memorial Hospital at the Coalition’s annual award recognition ceremony in Columbia.   Congratulations to Greer Memorial Hospital.

This month, the USDA announced the South Carolina WIC Program would receive a $412,386 2011 WIC Breastfeeding Performance Bonus Award in the category of Greatest Improvement in Breastfeeding Rates. The South Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition congratulates the South Carolina WIC Program for this national recognition and its progress in promoting breastfeeding in South Carolina.

The nation’s Healthy People 2020 objectives are for 82 percent of newborns to breastfed initially and 61 percent after six months. We have progress to make, but the goal is attainable.
