The Coalition and Eat Smart, Move More SC recently recognized Greer Memorial Hospital at the Coalition’s annual award recognition ceremony in Columbia.

The South Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition (Coalition) promotes, protects and supports breastfeeding as the superior form of nutrition and nurture for infants and young children. Breastfeeding is the gold standard of infant feeding due to multiple health benefits to mother and baby. This method of feeding is endorsed by many professional groups including The World Health Organization, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the USDA, and many others. South Carolina has encouraged breastfeeding and acknowledged it as a public right. Federal law now requires employers to provide lactation support in the workplace.

Breastfeeding support at the workplace can positively impact the bottom line by lowering healthcare costs, enhancing productivity, decreasing absenteeism, improving employee satisfaction, increasing retention and improving corporate image. The workforce is changing dramatically. More than 50% of adult women are now in the workforce. Two-thirds of new employees will be women starting or returning to work. Seventy-five percent of working women become pregnant during their working lives.

Acknowledging these facts, Greer Memorial Hospital was recognized as a Mother-Friendly Employer. Their lactation support program includes: a lactation support policy that provides employees with flexible break time to maintain lactation, education for all employees regarding the program and community resources available, and a private space (other than a bathroom) for women who need to use a breast pump at work.

The Coalition and Eat Smart, Move More SC recently recognized Greer Memorial Hospital at the Coalition’s annual award recognition ceremony in Columbia. Congratulations to Greer Memorial Hospital.

Three out of four new mothers in the United States start out breastfeeding, according to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but by the end of six months, only 43 percent of infants are still breastfed. The nation’s Healthy People 2020 objectives are for 82 percent of newborns to breastfed initially and 61 percent after six months. We have progress to make, but the goal is attainable.
